The slow month of January is over and it’s time to get hyped for a lot of major film releases coming out within the next 11 months. In my opinion, the last time there was a memorable year for movies was 2014, which gave us so many great movies in every genre, including action, sci-fi, and drama. For the majority, the last two years have been lackluster without much creativity or inspiration. However, there is a lot of potential for 2017 to bring back tons of excitement and make it another memorable year for the ages. So without further ado, here is a quick rundown of the top 10 movies I am most excited to watch this year!

I’ve been a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean series since I dragged my parents to go watch the first one with me in theatres back in 2003. Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow is definitely one of the most iconic and memorable characters in cinema history. I love the cast, the stories, the soundtrack, and the entire pirate theme. While the initial trilogy was great, the 4th installment was forgettable so here’s hoping that the 5th one will bring back its original charm.

This movie has a LOT riding on it. DC and Warner Brothers have yet to match the success of Marvel and Disney ever since they brought the Avengers together in 2012. Man of Steel was good, Batman v Superman was okay, and Suicide Squad was meh. Wonder Woman is up next so let’s hope she’ll create some more hype for the league being assembled. The cast is looking great as we’ve already seen Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in action. I’m hopeful that the Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman will wow audiences as well.

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus in 2012 was pretty much a sci-fi masterpiece. It had the dark and mysterious atmosphere, the eerie score, and a lot of thought-provoking themes. Michael Fassbender was extraordinary playing the role of an android named David and by the end of the movie, we still didn’t know if he was a friend or foe. The lines of reality were constantly blurred throughout the film but that meant that it left us with more questions than answers. The sequel is finally coming out 5 years later and I’m really hoping that it will expand the mythology further and show us more Xenomorphs.

Back in 2014, the original John Wick completely took me by surprise. In my opinion, it was one of the best action movies ever made and also Keanu Reeves’ best role since the Matrix trilogy. It was a breath of fresh air in the midst of so many superhero movies that dominate today’s box office. The story was intriguing and the pre-existing underworld that was referred to in the movie, such as the Continental Hotel, made sense. The action scenes in the movie were absolutely stunning (particularly the one within the nightclub) and the camerawork wasn’t shaky, unlike other action movies today. With a bigger budget, I have no doubt in my mind that the second chapter will amaze me just as much, if not more.

I truly applaud Marvel and Disney for taking this team of B-list heroes and turning them into regular household names. The original Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 couldn’t have been made well with any other studio as it would’ve been far too big of a risk. However, Marvel’s gamble played off and they created a genuine story where this team of misfits put their differences aside and worked together. It had the perfect blend of action, humour, and emotion. Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot (Baby Groot in the sequel), and Rocket Raccoon are all amazing characters and I can’t wait to see them again on the big screen.
Release Date: November 3
Although 2011’s Thor was a great introduction to the God of Thunder, Thor: The Dark World didn’t exceed expectations. However, I have a feeling that the upcoming third installment could be the best yet. It supports a stellar cast and the plot sounds like it’ll showcase some serious destruction, while also tying into the next Avengers movie. Not to mention that the Hulk will play a prominent role as they’re weaving the Planet Hulk storyline into it. Doctor Strange is rumoured to be in the movie as well, which just goes to show how far the Marvel cinematic universe has really come.

My entire list consists of sequels except for this one. Not much is known about this movie other than the fact that it concerns the Dunkirk evacuation in France during World War II. But the reason this is one of my most anticipated movies is because it’s directed by Christopher Nolan, one of the best directors of all time who has a proven track record. Every single one of his movies contain an unbelievable story, unforgettable score, and stunning cinematography. His filmmaking style is unparalleled and his name is attached to some of the most jaw-dropping movies ever made, including The Prestige, the Dark Knight trilogy, and Interstellar. I am positive that Dunkirk will join this list when it’s out.
Release Date: March 3
This is it. The final time we’ll see Hugh Jackman play the role of Wolverine after 17 long years since the first X-Men movie. From the trailers, his last adventure is turning out to be a real emotional one. It’s also the first time a Wolverine movie will be rated R, which means we’ll finally get to witness some real violence, gore, and rage behind those claws. Aside from Logan himself, it will most likely feature Professor X’s last appearance as well (Patrick Stewart), which just adds to the emotional weight behind these characters that I’ve grown up watching since I was 6 years old. I hope that this will be the best possible swan song because Hugh Jackman will always be irreplaceable to me as Logan/Wolverine.
Release Date: July 14
2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes made me realize that I should never judge a movie by the trailer. I still remember walking into the theatre with my cousins without any excitement but leaving the theatre with a huge grin on my face after witnessing such an epic sci-fi film. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes expanded the story further and you truly felt the internal struggles and emotions of the apes, as well as the humans. The third installment speaks for itself and will feature an all-out war between Caesar and his apes against the humans threatening their species’ survival. These movies are definitely unique and I can’t wait to experience how the rest of Caesar’s story unfolds.
Release Date: December 15
And there you have it. My number one most anticipated movie of 2017 is Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, which also means that you know now I am a major Star Wars fan. I grew up in the Prequels era so in my personal opinion, they aren’t major abominations as some other fans like to claim. The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones have some great moments while Revenge of the Sith is one of the best in the entire series. I love the original trilogy and also Rogue One, which surprisingly went far above my expectations and gave us one of the best Darth Vader scenes ever. Anyways, The Last Jedi will most likely deliver a darker story than The Force Awakens and continue the character arcs for Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren. Luke Skywalker is rumoured to have a much larger role this time around and I hope that a lot of questions will get answered in this film. The poster above, which was only revealed online a few days ago, has already generated so much speculation and so many fan theories. Only Star Wars films can have that big of an impact where simply revealing a red logo along with a subtitle will cause fans to go in a frenzy. This episode will be the second part in the sequel trilogy (episodes 7, 8, 9) and I know that we will surely witness another epic space adventure. May the Force be with you!
The movies below didn’t make my cut for the top 10 but I am still very excited to watch them!
Transformers: The Last Knight
Kong: Skull Island
The Fate of the Furious
