Do you know what it feels like when your mind is in a dark place?
You were competing against life but you just lost the race
Once on top of the world and felt like a superhero
But you came crashing down and ended up at ground zero
Your favourite sit-com is no longer funny
You don’t have the drive to work and earn money
You don’t feel the need to go out anymore and socialize
You’re a prisoner in your own home but people don’t realize
This sickness of the mind hits you hard like a storm
You question your purpose and ask why you were born
An invisible force that can affect you at any time
Suffering on the inside but you tell people you’re “fine”
It doesn’t matter if you’re poor or rich, living off welfare or fame
No one is exempt, just ask Kate Spade, Avicii, or Anthony Bourdain
You used to laugh a lot but now you can’t even crack a smile
You wish you could go back to your childhood and relive that lifestyle
Food begins to taste bland and the grass isn’t as green
You’re isolated and alone, not part of a team
You check your social media to see others’ happiness and you become envious
But the more you scroll down, the more your thoughts become venomous
Feeling like no one really cares about you so you won’t care about them
Nothing can help you, not even a vacation, a workout, or a bottle of rum
You don’t know when it started or why it started
Your body is still functioning but your soul has departed
Maybe your partner left you, a friend used you, or a family member let you down
Just like a lifeguard watching you struggle in the water and letting you drown
Now you’re stranded in the blackness and silence of outer space
This is what it feels like when your mind is in a dark place
